MR Artifacts, Safety, and Quality Control1

چکیده
Artifacts in magnetic resonance (MR) imaging result from the complex interaction of contemporary imager subsystems, including the main magnet, gradient coils, radiofrequency (RF) transmitter and receiver, and reconstruction algorithm used. An understanding of the sources of artifacts enables optimization of the MR imaging system performance. The increasing clinical use of very high magnetic field strengths, highperformance gradients, and multiple RF channels also mandates renewed attention to the biologic effects and physical safety of MR imaging. Radiologists should be aware of the potential physiologic effects of prolonged exposure to magnetic fields, acoustic noise, and RF energy during MR imaging and should use all the available methods for avoiding accidents and adverse effects. Imaging equipment should be regularly tested and monitored to ensure its stability and the uniformity of its functioning. Newly installed or upgraded MR systems should be tested by a physicist or qualified engineer before use. In addition, the authors recommend participation in the MR imaging accreditation program of the American College of Radiology to establish the initial framework for an adequate quality assurance program, which then can be further developed to fulfill local institutional needs. Aneurysm clips made of titanium: magnetic characteristics and artifacts in MR.
PURPOSE To evaluate the magnetic characteristics, artifact formation, and implant safety of titanium aneurysm clips for use in MR imaging. METHODS Aneurysm clips made of titanium alloy TiAl6V4 were tested in a magnetometer to determine their magnetic susceptibility and in a 1.5-T MR imager using both a geometric phantom and an animal model. A commercially available alpha-Phynox clip served as...
متن کاملMR artifacts, heat production, and ferromagnetism of Guglielmi detachable coils.
The Guglielmi detachable coil, a platinum microcoil used in the endovascular treatment of intracranial aneurysms, was studied in vitro for its MR imaging artifacts, heat production, and ferromagnetism. In addition, imaging artifacts were studied in vivo in eight patients who had undergone therapeutic placement of these coils. These devices displayed a very low level of MR artifact and no ferrom...
متن کاملMRI Artifacts: Mechanism and Control
A wide variety of artifacts is routinely encountered on MR images. This article presents the cause, appearance, diagnostic effect, and available remedies for the artifacts that are most frequently observed on MR images and are of greatest clinical significance. Combined with routine preventive maintenance of imaging equipment, consistent quality control, and appropriate selection of imaging par...
متن کاملBest current practice for obtaining high quality EEG data during simultaneous FMRI.
Simultaneous EEG-fMRI allows the excellent temporal resolution of EEG to be combined with the high spatial accuracy of fMRI. The data from these two modalities can be combined in a number of ways, but all rely on the acquisition of high quality EEG and fMRI data. EEG data acquired during simultaneous fMRI are affected by several artifacts, including the gradient artefact (due to the changing ma...
متن کاملProgrammable CSF shunt valve: in vitro assessment of MR imaging safety at 3T.
A programmable CSF shunt valve was assessed for magnetic field interactions, heating (transmit-receive body radio-frequency coil; whole-body averaged specific absorption rate, 2.1 W/kg), functional alterations, and artifacts at 3T. The programmable valve showed minor magnetic field interactions and heating was not excessive (+0.8 degrees C). The function of the programmable valve was not altere...
